Snapdragon Maryland Lavender F1 | Group 1–2 | Antirrhinum majus

Maryland Lavender F1 is a premium snapdragon variety bred specifically for short-day and cool-season production. This elegant lavender-toned cultivar performs exceptionally well under low light and low temperature conditions, making it an ideal choice for early spring, autumn, and winter greenhouse production.

As a Group 2 snapdragon, Maryland Lavender is not recommended for summer or long-day production, where plants may produce shorter, thinner stems. For best results, pair with other Group 1–2 snapdragon series such as Costa II or Avignon to ensure uniform growth and flowering schedules.

Highly valued by cut-flower growers, this variety produces refined spikes with excellent vase life and can be grown either as a one-cut crop for long stems or multi-cut for extended harvest.

Crop & Plant Details

  • Scientific name: Antirrhinum majus
  • Common name: Snapdragon
  • Series: Maryland
  • Colour: Soft lavender
  • Life cycle: Annual
  • Hybrid status: F1 Hybrid
  • Days to maturity: 100–110 days

Germination & Sowing

  • Days to germination: 7–14 days
  • Temperature: 21–24 °C (70–75 °F)
  • Sowing method: Transplant (recommended)
  • Sowing depth: Surface sow (light required)

Sow seeds 8–10 weeks before planting out into 128-cell trays or preferred seedling containers. Light is required for germination; cover seeds only lightly to keep them in place. A thin layer of fine vermiculite helps retain moisture and prevent algae growth.

Water from below or mist gently to avoid displacing seeds.

Transplant seedlings when the first true leaves appear (approximately 3–4 weeks after sowing).

Pinching & Spacing

Pinching is recommended if branching is desired.

  • Pinch plants back by half their height once they have 4–6 true leaves or are 7–10 cm tall.
  • Note: Pinching will delay flowering by a few weeks.
  • Plant spacing: 10–30 cm (4–12″)
  • If pinched: Space plants 15–30 cm apart

Direct seeding is not recommended.

Growing Conditions

  • Light preference: Sun / Partial shade
  • Soil: Rich, moist, well-drained soil
  • Soil pH: Neutral preferred

Harvest & Post-Harvest

  • Harvest stage: When the lower ⅓–½ of florets are open
  • Stem length:
    • One-cut: up to full plant height (up to 150 cm / 60″)
    • Multi-cut: approx. 30–90 cm (12–36″)
  • Vase life: 7–10 days
  • Cold storage: 0–4 °C (32–40 °F)

Uses

  • Cut flower
  • Edible flower (decorative use)
